In 2009 social media went truly mainstream. Facebook reached 350m global active users and, according to research by Nielsen for new media age, enjoyed record levels of engagement. It accounts for 75% of all time spent on social networks, with heavy users spending 125 hours a year on the site (nma 5 November 2009).
