Gadfly - 11.06.09
Regular readers will know nothing excites Gadfly more than fast cars and affiliate marketing, especially both together. Following last month’s listing of top affiliates’ wheels (Gadfly, nma 14 May 2009), IAB Affiliate Marketing Council chair Matt Bailey upped the stakes prior to last week’s a4uAwards. While having a couple of pre-awards shandies at The Met Bar, Bailey was spotted swapping tales from the fast lane with none other than current F1 championship leader Jenson Button. Apparently it was all Bailey could do to keep Button talking about what it’s like to hurtle round corners at 150mph with Lewis Hamilton in your rear-view mirror, rather than brand bidding.

As you’d expect, the evening itself was a stylish affair, with not a pair of Y-fronts in sight. Skimbits (left) picked up a hat-trick of gongs while digital man-about-town Scott Gallacher managed to avoid the chagrin of handing out an award to his own company. Last year he got stuck in a lift full of affiliates; this year he took the stairs.
Lennon and McCartney. Morecambe and Wise. Hinge and Bracket. History is littered with great examples of creative duos, but last week Gadfly bid a fond farewell to digital’s favourite ‘business couple’, Chris Perry and Neil Miller, co-founders of the agency formerly known as DNA, then subsequently known as Avenue A/Razorfish and now known as plain Razorfish. The dynamic duo officially signed off last week and are keeping their next moves closely guarded, although Perry is off to Marrakech for his 40th. The pair have been working together for 14 years, longer than many marriages, although they were never seen shopping in John Lewis together.
Showbusiness gossip. Readers may have seen the news that Julie Walters will be playing Mo Mowlam in a forthcoming Channel4 drama to be shown next year called, somewhat provocatively, Mo. Details of the rest of the cast have yet to be revealed, but Gadfly knows that if you want the answer to anything you can always turn to a search specialist. So is there any truth to the rumour that freedom fighter turned minister Martin McGuinness will be played by none other than the brother of Neil McCarthy, marketing provocateur at SEM agency Latitude? Whatever next? Search marketers lining up to audition for Ian Paisley and Tony Blair?
