Gadfly - 14.05.09

Gadfly is rarely outclassed intellectually but had to admit he was struggling at last week’s Glastonbury Warm-Up Party, held by Orange to celebrate sponsoring the event for the 11th year. The questions for their music quiz seemed to require a particularly intimate knowledge of Orange’s sponsorship arrangements over the years. Even looking over Spencer McHugh’s shoulder couldn’t help poor old Gadders bag the winning prize of a couple of Glasto tickets. At least he got to see Razorlight at the O2, courtesy of News International’s senior management, including digital trading director Alex Hole.

Mention affiliate marketing and Gadfly comes over all warm and fuzzy. After all, in times like these we need inspirational stories about how you can earn riches beyond the dreams of avarice from the web. When you combine this with every man’s favourite subject, cars, you’re onto a winner. So superaffiliate Kieron Donoghue found on his blog at here.org.uk when he asked online marketers what they currently and would like to drive.

The resulting parade of flash cars is, in Gadders’ humble opinion, all a bit Top Gear. So full marks to search expert David Naylor for thinking outside the Boxster. He dreams of a VW Campervan Samba Split Screen. Without a mockney chef at the wheel. Donoghue himself drives a white Range Rover Vogue SE Supercharged (left) You don’t get much change from £75,000 when you buy one of these new, and you only get 17 miles to the gallon combined. Now that’s a lot of clicks.

Gadfly was excited by the news the IAB has launched a Lead Generation taskforce as it came just as a picture of hardened soldiers (right) arrived in his inbox. But it turns out this was merely part of a recent AdJug team-building exercise. As well as playing at soldiers, the team built towers out of milkcrates and solved problems such as taming a yellow bucket.

Gadders hears the IAB is so keen to see regulatory guru Nick Stringer win the nma Greatest Individual Contribution To New Media Award this year - known by all as the NMAGICTNMA - that last week it was promising he’d run around Trafalgar Square naked if he won. Voting has now closed, sadly, but Gadfly can’t wait until the Awards on 25 June to find out whether Stringer will be on a winning streak.
