Gadfly – 02.09.10

Gadfly has it in good authority that things might not be as they seem in the world of online newspapers. Despite coming out publicly against News International’s paywalls around content on The Times, Sunday Times and, as of next month, News of the World (nma 19 August 2010), two publishers have actually approached the company to say that they would follow suit if the scheme proves to be a success. Annoyingly (or sensibly, depending on your point of view) the source refused to say which ones, but you can probably guess.

With that juicy morsel of gossip hanging in the air, time to tenuously link to something food related. One employee at Everything Everywhere, parent company of the newly merged mobile operators Orange and T-mobile, is clearly unafraid of the prospect that “cooking doesn’t get tougher than this” and is looking to woo the tastebuds of judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode in the upcoming series of Masterchef. Gadfly wonders if the staffer is contractually obliged to prepare duck a l’orange served from a portable tea tray.

Talking of tough competition, Bank Holiday Monday saw the Red Bull Music Academy Radio online radio station return to Notting Hill for its annual Carnival party, an event so anticipated that only those applying for guest-list places within the first 45 seconds or so of the online application page going live got their names down.

Luckily, Gadfly was one of those with the fastest fingers and was there to witness the atmosphere live up to expectations, as the crowd, fuelled by vast quantities of Red Bull with black vodka from the free bar, went mad to the likes of DJ David Rodigan and headliners Major Lazer. Gadfly thinks a part of him might actually still be there, since he doesn’t remember leaving.
