Gadfly – 27.01.12

So, another January draws to a close. Good. That means people might start doing stuff in the evenings again. Gadders certainly hopes so.

Anyway, this week, Gadfly was wined and dined at Hix in Soho by two people from the search wing of a certain creative agency.

The conversation soon turned to the finesses of home brewing – with a great tactic of creating “rocket-fuel” cider revealed to Gadders: repeated freeze distillion.

This process – whereby the liquid being distilled is partially frozen, then the ice section removed, leaving a more potent, flavoursome solution, then repeated to taste – is apparently a great way to help pass the time in the countryside areas such as these guys live in – or as one affectionately termed it: “Bumfuck Tennessee Territory”.

The booze recipes didn’t stop there, but they did move into a classier territory than moonshine cider: homemade cocktails. If you ever find yourself needing to liven up flagging stragglers at a party, it’s time for a Shamblers.

The recipe is simple: vodka, champagne (because, you know, there’ll probably be some just lying around) and Red Bull, mixed together in a giant punch bowl, saucepan, wok, bucket or whatever large recepticle is to hand. Everyone must then sit in a circle and take turns to have a swig until it is all gone, and voilà, the party is back on track.

If using a bucket, you might find that it serves a secondary purpose at this point too.
