Gadfly - 04.02.10
Gadfly is always happy to see creativity rewarded, so an article in the London Metro this week caught his eye. Laura Jordan-Bambach, prime mover at She Says and executive creative director at LBi, has been enthusing about Poke’s nifty Bakertweet device in a piece for D&AD in the giveaway paper. Keen-eyed Gadfly readers may remember Bakertweet - which lets Shoreditch’s Albion bakery alert its many fans to when its buns are ready - being first mentioned in this column last year (Gadfly, nma 9 April 2009). With tweets like ‘Want the class without the snob? Pick up a pair of these bouncy flouncy English Muffins, then eat them both’ from @albionsoven, no wonder Jordan-Bambach says the bakery killed her dreams of a carb-free summer.

Carbs were definitely on the agenda at Lida’s tenth birthday party at Ill Bottaccio last week. Having received an invite with the instruction to ‘Unlock your decadent self’, Gadders was hoping for scenes that would make Casanova blush. But apart from a canape menu that included green-with-envy blinis and a pint-sized Darth Vader and Oompa Loompas – one of whom greeted Gadfly at the door by asking for a cigarette – the behaviour was relatively civilized. Although Gadders had to leave before the girls on the Boots account got into their stride.
On the other hand, things were getting UGLE – that’s United Grand Lodge of England – at the Specific Media party. For some reason best known to Specific, this was held in the imposing art deco pile that is the Freemasons’ Hall in Covent Garden. The ornate ceiling, no stranger to obscure rituals, looked down on a packed floor where DJ Mark Ronson entertained hordes of media agency types from his plinth while beers were drunk, literally, by the bucket load. However, the lack of dedicated ladies’ facilities fazed some of the female guests, who were overheard asking what urinals were doing in their loos. If you have to ask, then you’ll never know.
Gadfly appreciated the hangover kit sent round by Specific Media in the morning and, in his fragile state, was rather unprepared for the news that Draftfcb is hiring Alastair Ross in the newly created role of head of ideas. Congratulations to Alastair, of course, but if he’s in charge of ideas, what will all those other people at the agency do now?
