Gadfly - 11.03.10

Gadfly received a letter the other day. That’s right, not a tweet but a letter, inside a window envelope. Who could be relying on such outmoded communication? ’Get your ads seen on Google’ it began in large blue letters, no doubt a headline and font tested ad nauseum. It went on to explain, ’When you advertise on Google, a potential customer types in what they’re looking for and your ad pops up on the right-hand side of the search results.’ No way! Thanks James Elias, head of business marketing at Google for clearing that up. But did he mean to reveal the magic sauce? As Gadders won’t be able to take up the offer of £50 of free AdWords (minus the £5 account activation fee) by 23 March, for any readers who are interested, the unique promotional code is SAVK-WXGB-UZ5X-U9TM-B3N.

Also in the post last week was one of Andrew Flintoff’s balls. Actually it was a training ball, with one white side and one red, to match your mood, although Gadfly wasn’t sure whether the great man himself had handled it. The world’s fastest bowler - well that’s what it says here - was born in Lancashire, and NorthernNet are keen to promote their new superfast highway for the North, with speeds of 1Gb per second. By ’eck, that’s faster than a motorcycle courier on a Panther Model 120 going up Snake Pass in t’driving rain.

Gadders was bereft not to have made it to the Mumsnet tenth birthday last week, held at Google’s UK HQ of all places. For some reason he couldn’t get a babysitter that night. Gordon and Sarah Brown turned up to pay tribute to co-founders Justine Roberts and Carrie Longton and the most powerful mums in the land. Matt Brittin, Google UK MD, was on hand to explain, in a way your mum would understand, what happens when potential customers type in what they’re looking for. Everyone left with a Google pen, but only if they’d played nicely with others and said thank you for being invited.

Finally, not quite tweet of the week but a message from Jazzsteppa alerting Gadfly to the fact that the Dubstep Collective is now on Twitter, with a pithy explanation of why the micro-blogging site is so popular. “Like every1 else; We hav nuffing important to say :) But som times funny shit happens”. Ah, the modern generation.

Have your say
