Gadfly - 29.07.10
Gadfly has been heartened by the sight of ping-pong tables popping up all over London this summer. It seems Yahoo is involved, although quite why is unclear. Perhaps it’s the idea of trying to hit a very fast-moving target that appeals.

Last week Gadders was treated to a display of the crisis management skills of the Yahoo team at a ping-pong-themed event in St Pancras Station (right). Two ’entertainers’ racing through the rush-hour crowds were mistaken for a pickpocket and victim, prompting one commuter to give chase. Event organisers had to quickly calm the situation as the entertainment was forcefully arrested by the have-a-go hero.

Elsewhere the only crimes being committed were against fashion as AOL’s sales team hosted a golf day at Brocket Hall near Welwyn Garden City, complete with expert tuition from club pros and Mickey Walker OBE. After a full English and a putting competition, agency types hit the links to do battle. The team featuring AOL’s Andy McNab, Steak’s Dan McIntosh, Harvest Digital’s Emma Wilson and Vivaki’s Marco Bertozzi (left, left to right) came first, while absolute beginner Conan Brewer from Profero hit the hole-in-one on the academy course. If a prize had been available for groovy golf slacks, McNab would have won it.
Finally, last week Gadfly was enjoying a spot of tapas on Goodge Street with the ever-affable Martin Talks from Blue Barracuda, when who should pass by but The Rubicon Project’s Jay Stevens, carrying a pot plant. Despite being VP and GM international, Stevens had rolled his sleeves up to help with an office move as the team settles into a new gaff in Charlotte Street. Nice to see him keeping that start-up vibe.
Gadders is no Monty Don, but the plant itself looked in need of perking up. Perhaps what The Rubicon Project is saving on removals it could put into a visit from a friendly gardener.
